5 Things Teaching Special Needs Kids Taught Me About Entrepreneurship!

Published about 1 month ago • 3 min read

Hi Reader,

This week I had a flashback to a unique experience I had a while back.

I was asked by my local college to teach health and nutrition to a class of special needs students. Despite my initial hesitation due to lack of experience, I decided to take on the challenge, supported by a dedicated team provided by the college.

I quickly discovered surprising parallels between teaching special needs kids and entrepreneurship. Here are five key lessons I learned:

  1. Flexibility is Key: Just as in entrepreneurship, teaching special needs kids demands adaptability. Plans often need to be adjusted on the fly to accommodate unexpected situations. I found myself modifying lesson plans and approaches to suit the individual needs of each student.
  2. Creativity Breeds Imagination: Witnessing the creativity and imagination of these students, uninhibited by conventional norms, reminded me of the power of thinking outside the box. In entrepreneurship, fostering a culture of creativity can lead to innovative solutions and fresh perspectives.
  3. Patience Pays Off: Teaching special needs kids requires immense patience. Similarly, building a successful business demands persistence and resilience in the face of challenges. Learning to maintain composure and navigate setbacks with patience is crucial for long-term success as an entrepreneur.
  4. Effective Communication is Fundamental: Simplifying instructions and conveying concepts in a way that resonated with these young learners highlighted the importance of clear and effective communication. In entrepreneurship, the ability to articulate ideas, engage customers, and inspire action is paramount.
  5. Embrace the Joy of Learning: Despite the challenges, the joy and enthusiasm these students exuded while learning reminded me to embrace the journey of learning. In entrepreneurship, maintaining a growth mindset and continuously seeking opportunities for personal and professional development is essential.

This experience was genuinely rewarding and one that left a lasting impact on me.

Hi Reader, Just the other day, I was reminded of an enlightening chat I had with a fellow fitness business owner who was struggling to attract new clients. His marketing efforts seemed ineffective, pulling in what he considered low-quality leads. Curious, I asked how long he had been part of my mailing list. "About two years," he replied. "This is our first conversation though...and you haven’t tried any of my programs yet?" He shared some hurdles—he couldn't find time away from his gym for...

Hi Reader, Have you ever considered the power of saying "no"? It's a simple word, but its impact can be profound. Last week, I found myself overwhelmed with requests from various projects, commitments, and obligations. I was spreading myself too thin, trying to please everyone and failing to prioritize my own well-being. That's when I remembered a lesson I learned long ago about the importance of setting boundaries. One evening, while reflecting on my day, I watched a documentary about...

Hi Reader, Last week, while wrapping up my stay in London after a fulfilling house-sitting experience, I found myself observing Rosa, the cat Sheena and I had been caring for over the past few weeks in our roles as TrustedHouseSitters. As the evening unfolded, I couldn't help but be drawn to the determined effort he put into retrieving her toy from under the couch. Despite the challenge before her, she persisted, scratching and whining in pursuit of her beloved toy. Each failed attempt only...
